How to Value a Screen Protector and Decide to Have One

Do you remember the times when screen protector for a smartphone is really a big thing and people are willing to go through fussy ways just to get one? Do you think your phone needs one right now? Do you think those screen protectors are still important as it was before?

Well, if you are going to spend another dollar for the screen protector, it is up to you, but at least know your facts straight so you won’t waste your money, time, and energy for something useless.

Everyone knows that mobile phones aren’t exactly cheap stuff; you are going to spend hundreds of dollars to get one and you certainly want to make sure that it stays in its pristine condition, right? Well, in the past, screen protector would make sure that scratches and dents to your display screen could be minimized. With your pockets filled with keys and coins, and then you drop your phone in there, it would be so easy for that precious gadget to get scratches.

However, technology has developed. We’re at this advanced stage where everything – including the smartphones – is reinforced with higher and better quality of materials. There are reasons why today’s smartphones are expensive; the coating and the quality of the display glass are different from the ones used in the past. Will screen protector be needed for today’s smartphones? Hmm, not so much. In fact, it is pretty unnecessary to use a screen protector for today’s gadgets.

Will screen protector be needed for today’s smartphones? Hmm, not so much. In fact, it is pretty unnecessary to use a screen protector for today’s gadgets.

As the name suggests, the screen protector protects your screen. Applying one to your gadget isn’t difficult, but you need to be careful if you want to make sure that the cut is right and fit. Not to mention that you will have to clean the surface first before applying the thin sheet clear plastic on your device. You certainly don’t want any cracks or bubbles to be seen on the screen. When there are scratches, it’s the protector that will be scratched; not your display screen. That’s why the screen protector was a huge hit because people would prefer replacing their screen protectors to the screen’s glass.

The Gorilla Glass Technology

But as technology develops, better material is being used to make the smartphone. Today’s devices are using the so-called Gorilla Glass, which is a tough and thick hard glass with high scratch resistance. The newer products made by Corning have been designed with better quality and better resistance, so you can expect new variants to be better than the last. For instance, the 2013 Gorilla Glass 3 has higher scratch resistance level up to 40% from Gorilla Glass 2. So, not so bad, huh?

If your smartphone is pretty new – and you are not using old types from more than five years ago – then you can be sure that your display screen is pretty solid and tough. Moreover, the quality of the screen protector and the toughened glass like Gorilla Glass is different. Sure, you may see several scratches on your protector, but it doesn’t mean that the same scratches will take the same impact on the Gorilla Glass. Coins and keys may be able to create scratches on the protector, but it is not the same thing with Gorilla Glass. Keys and coins – and other household items from metal – are made from different kinds of metal that is used for making Gorilla Glass, so be sure that the Gorilla Glass won’t be easily scratched by common items. If you are still in doubt about the quality of the glass, you can check Youtube and see several attempts been made to scratch the Gorilla Glass – by using different kinds of tools, even knives – and all fail successfully.

The Flaws

If you still think that using the screen protector is okay, you may want to think again because there are some disadvantages that you have to endure if you apply one for your device. First of all, today’s smartphones are mostly touch screens, so applying the protector will totally change the experience of operating your device; they can be grippier or softer. Moreover, you should also consider about discoloration of the protector, which will change the look of the screen. It is certainly not appealing or attractive. And last, consider the process of applying one. You should be extra careful or you may end up creating bubbles or scratches. You can always ask for help to have the protector applied, but then again….it’s going to cost you.How to Value a Screen Protector and Decide to Have One2

Despite all the good stuff about the Gorilla Glass, there are some things that can damage it, really. Sand, for a starter, is the biggest culprit that can scratch your device. Hard rocks and diamonds can also scratch the screen. If you spend most of your times on the beach or you are a clumsy individual who is likely to drop your device anywhere you go, it is a good idea to use a screen protector. Otherwise, don’t bother; your device is safe and sound.

What about a screen protector with anti-fingerprint coating, anyway? Well, today’s smartphones have their own special oleophobic coating that will repel the natural oil on the fingertips. Sure, the oil may build up over time, but you can simply wipe the screen off and you are good to go! Screen protectors aren’t must have items anymore; not with the advanced technology we have today. But under special circumstances and conditions, you still need to protect your device from the possibility of damages. Act smartly and wisely, and you can end up saving quite a lot.
